Your brain already knows how the sentence ends.

You're mid-conversation. She's talking, and somewhere around word four of her sentence, you already know how it ends.

You're not being rude. You're not tuning out. If anyone asked, you'd say you were listening, and you'd mean it.

But your brain doesn't wait for people to finish talking. It's been predicting the end of every sentence your whole life, because guessing is faster than waiting, and the brain always picks fast.

The closer the relationship, the older the guess. So the person you know best is, in a strange way, the easiest person to mishear.
